PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS TIPPED ON THE COMPLIANCE WITH DATA PROTECTION & PRIVACY LAW

On Friday 5th May, 2023 Rwanda Information Society Authority in collaboration with National Cyber Security Authority held a one-day workshop with Chief Budget Managers, legal Officers of public institutions to discuss with them the implementation and compliance with the Law No 058/2021 of 13/10/2021 relating to the protection of personal data and privacy gazetted on October 15, 2021. Public and private institutions need a guideline to comply with the provisions of the above-mentioned law as there are associated penalties to non-compliance.

The purpose of the workshop was to align with all public institutions on DPPL and to encourage them to read and understand the law before the transitional period ends. It also aimed at guiding institutions on the appointments of Data Protection Officers (DPOs) in their institutions and advising on the possible positions that can be acting on the position for the meantime and to harmonize the awareness plan & data inventory processes.

After highlighting the main points of the law, participants raised their concerns and views with regards to the implementation of DPP Law. They further concluded that such workshops and trainings should continue throughout all sectors to inform them of what they are required by the law for better implementation.
