Proper e-waste management is key to safeguarding environment

From Wednesday 10th to Friday 12th May,2023, Rwanda Information Society Authority - RISA conducted a 3-day workshop for public hospitals on e-waste management. Participants includes public hospitals staff dealing with e-waste in the district hospitals and the referral hospitals. Those are particularly logistics officers and environmental health officers in from the district and referral hospitals.

They were trained about different categories of e-waste and the appropriate disposal of e-waste, regulations governing e-waste management as well as procedures for the disposal of state private assets, including end-of-life and broken electrical & electronic equipment and their accessories, negative impacts of e-waste and proper management of e-waste generated by their respective health facilities.

On the last day of the workshop, participants conducted a study tour at Enviroserve Rwanda - E-waste recycling facility in Bugesera District to witness how it is currently done.

Over the past decades, Rwanda embarked on a journey toward digital transformation of the country as is illustrated in policy documents and achievements made to improve the ICT sector in the country. This process has increased the demand and usage of electrical and electronic equipment across the country. The increased acquisition and usage of electrical and electronic equipment has and is anticipated to contribute to the increase of e-waste (electrical and electronic waste) as the devices come to the end of their life. Following this increased generation of e-waste and being mindful of the negative impacts of e waste on the environment and humans, the Government of Rwanda has adopted strategies to ensure proper management of e-waste.
